Jefferson Parish is seeking a dynamic, highly motivated leader who can work effectively and collaboratively with the Parish Administration, Public Works Departments, consultants, as well as other governmental agencies and local, state, and federal public officials. The Department of Sewerage is tasked with the delivery of critical public services to residents, including treatment of wastewater, pumping of untreated sewage, collection of untreated sewage in the gravity line system, and pumping of the treated water to the Mississippi River for discharge. The Director oversees approximately 200 employees and manages an annual operating budget of approximately $94 million. The ideal candidate is a visionary who thinks outside the box and offers leadership capabilities and a proven track record of successful interactions with members of the public, employees, directors, and elected officials.
The Director’s duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Oversees daily operations of five wastewater treatment plants, approximately 520 lift stations, over 1,300 miles of gravity pipe and 100 miles of force main pipe; and an estimated 22,000 manholes.
Develops and administers the department’s annual and capital budgets; approves expenditures.
Oversees personnel management; hires and trains personnel; evaluates employee work performance; approves salary increases, disciplinary actions, transfers, and promotions; schedules work assignments; conducts staff meetings.
Directs capital improvement and maintenance projects; reviews and approves engineering proposals and construction/maintenance plans; analyzes project costs.
Coordinates operations with regulatory agencies; ensures compliance with applicable regulations and permits; consults with regulatory personnel regarding department operations.
Ensures compliance with workplace safety regulations; reviews accident reports and directs appropriate action.
Assists the Public Works Director in directing, controlling, and supervising functions of sanitary waste within the public sewer system to include its collection, treatment, and disposal.
Qualified candidates will possess a four-year degree in civil, sanitary, or chemical engineering, or biochemistry; or a four-year degree in a related field which must be accompanied by five (5) years of administrative experience. The candidate must possess or be able to obtain a valid Louisiana driver’s license within ten (10) business days of hire.
The mission of the Department of Sewerage is to serve the citizens of Jefferson Parish by providing effective conveyance, treatment and disposal of wastewater while protecting public health and the environment.
Four major functions are required to fulfill those goals:
Treatment of Wastewater
Pumping of untreated sewage
Collection of untreated sewage in gravity line system
Pumping of the treated water to the Mississippi River for discharge
