Provide critical, hands-on maintenance, repair, and construction services to ensure efficient and reliable operation of facilities and hatchery systems statewide.
Leveraging expertise across multiple construction disciplines, you will maintain and improve essential infrastructure, specializing in complex hatchery production pumps and motors, filtration systems, water supply systems, small motors, gear drives, hydraulic systems, and crowders.
In addition, this role supports construction and maintenance operations by leading field crews, conducting facility and safety inspections and coordinating repairs, schedules, and materials.
What to Expect- Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Mechanical Maintenance Team Lead will,
Lead Mechanical Maintenance:
Lead the assessment and preventative maintenance activities of fish hatchery production pumps up to 300 horsepower, as well as performs similar tasks on domestic submersible, end suction, and centrifugal pumps, production valves, manifolds and flow meters.
Change oil and filters in gear drives, vertical turbine pumps, small motors, various stationary hydraulic systems and similar mechanical systems.
Identify worn or damaged bearings, packings, bushings, and similar components determining the necessary repair actions.
Stock and maintain inventory of common repair/replacement parts.
Keep detailed records of all maintenance activities performed on various systems at hatchery and wildlife facilities statewide.
Project Leadership:
Assist in the preparation, scheduling, and supervision of work plans for the maintenance, alteration and repair of mechanical and plumbing systems and components.
Oversee the execution of the work, including quality, productivity, and safety, by ensuring that the crew adheres to project specifications and complies with all agency standards.
Use of computerized maintenance management system to track the requested work, record work completion details, document and maintain relative information.
Prepares basic post-inspection reports outlining the condition of systems, issues identified, and recommendation for repair or mitigation.
Monitor incoming work orders related to preventative maintenance to determine and coordinate the crew’s schedule and budget, updates and documents work order progress after completion.
Plumbing:
Visually inspect and locate septic holding tanks and filters. Clean and clear filters as necessary and provide recommendations to property managers for regular septic tank maintenance.
Assess the conditions of residential and commercial plumbing components at hatchery facilities statewide, including exercising valves and inspecting supply lines for potential failures.
Mechanical and Metal Fabrication:
Independently perform maintenance and diagnostic functions on crowders, rotating belt screens, electronic rolling doors, winches, and predation structures.
Assess the need for replacements and take action such as replacing seals, gear boxes, hydraulic drives, motors, and conducting oil changes as needed.
Working Conditions:
Work setting, including hazards:
Duties are performed at construction sites on hatchery and wildlife areas and occasionally in a fabrication shop. Some tasks involve sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Fieldwork hazards may include working on rough terrain, riverbanks, slippery slopes and confined and difficult to reach spaces.
Bend, stoop, squat, twist, push, pull, and lift 50 pounds repetitively when loading and unloading trucks or moving materials around project site.
Operate motor vehicles in hazardous weather conditions such as snow and ice while on mountain passes, highways, and roads.
This position may involve working in or near water, including tasks that require navigating, negotiating, and performing duties related to water environments.
Schedule: Typically, Monday – Thursday,6:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M. Work schedule will include overnight stays, evening and weekend work and overtime as needed.
Travel Requirements: Statewide travel required 60-80% depending on season.
Tools and Equipment: Basic hand tools, power tools such as drills, cut off saws, circular saws, hydraulic punch, metal band saws, grinders, welders, cutting torch, plasma cutter, jointers, planers, table saw, routers, powered drain snakes, personnel lifts, mini excavators and backhoes, chainsaws, jack hammers and/or powered motors, automotive equipment and trailers, telescoping and scissor lifts, scaffolding.
Customer Interactions: Frequent interactions varying between federal, local, inter-agency, and intra-agency customers and vendors.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
One (1) or more of the following:
Two (2) years of experience as a Maintenance Mechanic 3
Three (3) years of experience as a Maintenance Mechanic 2
Four (4) years of journey-level experience in two (2) or more construction or building trades
Two (2) years of journey-level experience in two (2) or more construction or building trades and two (2) years of vocational training in a related program
In addition, all the following competencies (may be gained concurrently)
Knowledge of basic skilled plumbing, mechanical maintenance, welding, and equipment operations
Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in mechanical maintenance
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and sketches
Certifications/Licenses: Valid Driver’s License.
Preferred Qualifications: In addition to the required qualifications, our ideal applicant will possess one or more of the following:
Extensive knowledge of fish-rearing systems, including key components and equipment such as water supply lines and valves, water intake structures, and pumps used for water conveyance.
Two (2) years of experience leading the work activities of other maintenance trade staff.
